Pups of the World

Updated January 8, 2007

Whelping box design by my 9 year old niece Braxton.  She painted 7 pups on the box way back in August.  They got their collars and names on the box.  Little China got a halo.  Drew wanted to give her wings but I’m not that good of an artist!

Diary of the pups below:

1-6-07—The little beasties are growing like crazy.  They love playing outside even today when it is a bit colder than it has been.  62 last night!  Rainy though and they don't mind being out when it is drizzling just not raining.  They ran under the heat pump when the rain actually came down.  I think they are going to be good little mud-runners.  They do like to chew of course and digging has become a favorite past time.  The dirt was actually flying!

I think they'll start sleeping in crates next week. I'll divide them in half and use 2 crates at first then start paring them down until they are in individual crate just before going home.
We're starting to wean  in earnest.  Poor Lannie only got to feed them once yesterday so she was a bit engorged and uncomfortable but worst of all is her rations have been cut significantly.  The pups are trying to figure out just how to get past the clothes she has been wearing.

1-1-07 — No pictures of them coming down the steps because they were too fast and racing to get back in.  Pups have been at the Haas’ since Wed.  Thankfully they have had good weather and have been able to go outside a lot.  Before they left the Bonness’ came for a visit from Cleveland.  I did count the puppies before they left.  I think they might be ready to take theirs home now. <VBG>

This week they have had lots of visitors including nieces and nephews for an X-Box weekend.  Apparently the pups think video games are really cool!

12-26-06— Even though it is cold out they have been out several times today and are getting better about the steps coming down into the house.  I’ll have to try to get a picture of it.

12-25-06 — Merry Christmas!  Pups spent the 2nd afternoon at my parents.  Through the rain spurts they got to go outside and then learn to climb up steps.  Play in the kitchen and play with Grandma Sunny.  Socks have become a favorite plaything—thanks Drew!  Everyone is eating well and showing the typical weight gain jump I see when they start on solid foods.   Right now they are on soaked kibble, goats milk and barley baby cereal, vitamin C and probiotics.

12-18-06—Pups are on their first field trip at the Haas’.  They left Sunday afternoon for a few days.  They got their first exposure to outside and loved it. Thank goodness the weather has been so perfect!  Perhaps it will hold out for a few more weeks.  Not likely in Ohio but I can dream!

This past week they gained anywhere from 3/4 lb to a whopping 1 1/4 lbs!  You would think that Brazil is dwarfing everyone but that is not the case.  She does look big compared to Italy but only her.  They are playing longer and exploring more when out of the box.

12-15-06— They’ve gotten legs all of a sudden!  Somehow they don’t look like the little fat rolly-pollies they were a day ago.  The play has increased in intensity and slightly in duration but still sleeping and growing takes precedence.  They got their first meal of goat’s milk and barley baby cereal tonight.  The loved it.  Half of them took quickly to eating the food and half of them took quickly to sucking on the plate <VBG>  We’ll do one meal a day for the next couple of days and then increase to two.

They have found their voices.  When they are awake they are barking and growling not just at each other but at nothing at all!  Very cute pups!  Their toys and things are getting rotated through the box.  Today they have a lights and sounds baby toy that makes lights and sounds when they step on it.  They also have their first pause table.  So far no takers on it.

I’ve started exposing newspaper on one end of the box.  They are better with their mobility so the slicker surface will be easier to navigate and it will make clean up a little easier since we are up to 3—4 bedding changes a day.   I’m hoping this great weather holds out for the next 5 weeks (yeah right!) so they can get some outdoor potty time!

12-11-06 — 3 weeks old already!  The time is flying.  They celebrated with a visitor—Uno the Sheltie.  She jumped in as though she had been here all of the time and Lannie welcomed her  with a drink and nuzzle.  Congo grabbed her by the neck to play and Brazil wanted to sleep on her like a soft fluffy pillow.

Everyone is gaining well.  They got their first out of the laundry basket experience this am when I cleaned out the whelping box blankets. The got to choose between the blanket I laid them on and exploring part of the room.  They all chose exploring.  There was lots of screaming, lots of loosing their footing and lots of figuring out how to walk on the much slicker floor.  They didn’t do too bad for their first time.

12-9-06 — Today was a major boost in their playing.  I had an agility trial in town today.  I came by the house to see them a few times and gave them some toys to play with. Did they love them!  They got their first rabbit kill.  OK.  So it was stuffed and smaller than them.  They still grabbed it and shook it!  The pictures need to come with sound to get the complete picture.  The growling and moaning! So funny!

12-8-06—They have changed so much these last few days!  Everyone is walking where ever they want to go.  Sometimes they roll over and start again but that makes it more fun to watch <G>  I’ve changed my opinion on them looking like walrus.  They look like elephant seals with their humpy noses.  Go to the Puppy Page for the proof.

Last night we had barking!  There is always growling or groaning going on.  The noises they make are hilarious. They are such a bright bunch!  Already they are moving to the other side of the box to pee.  Sometimes they just get front feet off the cushy stuff and its far enough but I’ve seen them actually get up from sleeping and go 3 or 4 feet away to pee.  What good puppies!

They like to lick and chew on hands, toes and noses.  The play only lasts about 30 seconds but it is cute when it happens.

12-4-06—Two weeks old today!  More eyes are open.  Everyone is showing some amount of peepers.  They are starting to interact with more than just the milk bar.  Brazil chewed on my fingers and wagged her tail.  Turkey started chewing on Jamaica.  They will be real pups in no time!

12-2-06 — It started with Brazil.  Spread to Italy and now America has 'em.  Their eyes are opening!  In the next couple of days they'll be really open.  I hate to use a flash on them right now so you'll see pics in a couple of days once the eyes have had a chance to really adjust to seeing the light.  Their ears are loosening up a bit too.  Looks like they’ll be able to hear pretty soon as well.  They are walking more though still they mostly sleep, eat, eat some more and sleep some more.

11-29-06 — Uno’s mom decided to wake up and is now being the doting mom hoped for so Uno will play vizsla-style later when she is a little bigger.  The Worldly Pups, are now officially The Walrus Pack.  They are growing so fast they appear to even have a layer of blubber coming along.  <g> Everyone is doing well.  Growing fast and getting stronger daily.  No peepers yet but their lids are loosening and they’ve got eye lashes now.  Any day this week I expect to see eyes!

You may notice a few shaved spots here and there in the pics.  We needed to go to peanut butter swipes on the heinies late last week  for several days several times a day to get Lannie to accept that poop is *her* responsibility.  She now has (thank goodness!) but there seems to be some irritation/possible infection from her licking and the left over PB so I wanted air to get to the skin well and to be able to treat it well.  The hair will grow back just fine over the next couple of weeks.  They also got a bath yesterday to make sure there is no PB left.  Oh did they LOVE that!  The screaming was quite loud <G>.

They have been getting lots of cuddle time.  I split them up by color groups to make sure each one gets their share of individual time away from the group for a bit.  We did the Reds yesterday (America and Italy).  The Greens the day before (Turkey and Jamaica).  The Blues will get their turn today (Congo and Brazil)

11-25-06—We had a little canine visitor today in addition to the many human visitors.  Uno, a singleton Sheltie came for a drink and to see if the vizsla babies could help stimulate more milk on her dam.  Check out the new pics posted to see the little girl with the red kids.  To give perspective on how much the red kids have grown, Uno weighs 11 ounces—same as Jamaica when she was born.

11-24-06—All of the pups are doing great.  Everyone has gained over 5 ounces.  I’ll record weights weekly.  They are doing the herky-jerky walk.  Very cute.  New pics posted today.

11-22-06—We have had a horrible accident.  In her zeal to get back into the box and lay down, Lannie stepped on one of the pups and she died.  China did not respond to CPR.

11-20-06—Pups born.  4 girls and three boys.  All are doing well and figured out nursing practically before they were dry.
