Dark Heritage - Languages of Riven

- Tesson: Tesson is a literal desendent of the language spoken by the slave-breeding race of the past. As such, dialects of it are spoken widely across the various realms, although not without their regional variants, of course. But, as it's only been 400-500 years or so since the gradual breakup of this language, most of the dialects have some degree of mutual intelligibility. At the GMs discretion, some intelligibility may be lost if speaking to someone in a very difficult (for you) dialect, incurring circumstance penalties of -2 or -4 in extreme circumstances to all Bluff, Diplomacy, possibly Disguise (depending on if your disguise involves speaking), Gather Information, possibly Intimidate, possibly Perform and Sense Motive checks. Normally after a few weeks exposure to an unfamiliar dialect, these penalties start to reduce until they become zero. At that point, a quick note on your character sheet in the form of dialects in parentheses after the name of the language might be appropriate moving forward.
- Copenzi: This language is primarily spoken in desert and arid regions of the Day Realm, and is the native tongue for Sanders and other people that live in the arid region. Copenzi uses an alphabet slightly different from Tesson, and is not difficult to master as languages go. No one is sure what the relationship of this language is to other language; it was not a written language until fairly recently when it adopted a customized version of the Tesson alphabet. Quite possibly it, or it's ancestors anyway, have been spoken in the region since time immemorial.
- Brutaye: A slave language spoken originally across much of the Twilight realm, but now widely adopted by Hulks with no known written alphabet, although there may be some rudimentary symbols for basic terms. Brutaye can be best described as guttural, and contains many harsh sounds easily confused for grunts. Brutaye has no known relationship to any other living language.
- Prescott: Simply put, the language of nobles. Many of the monarchy's prized tomes are written in Prescott, which uses the standard Tesson alphabet but incorporates a slightly different vowel structure. All Mannikins are taught this dialect as a matter of custom, since historically they were bred to serve aristocratic purposes. Prescott is an archaic branch of the same language as Tesson, but not closely enough related to help in understanding one if you speak the other. Imagine this as the "Latin" of the world.
- Graycode: Literally, a code language spoken (perhaps communicated is a better term) between Grays. This language was developed by Grays for their work as spies, assassins, and covert operatives. Nothing more is known. As a completely artificial language meant to be used as a code, it is unrelated to any other language in Riven, and takes twice the ranks of skillpoints spent in Speak Language (graycode) as any other language to develop proficiency. It also takes a teacher; this is not a language you can eventually learn by hanging out with native speakers. Hardly anyone who is not a gray can "speak" this language.
- Lumoshe: The language of the Twilight Realm. A bizarre dialect which seems to incorporate elements from several of the aforementioned languages, and uses letters unique unto itself. It is believed that this language was initially little more than a pidgin or Creole "combination" of several languages that eventually bulked out its dialect and developed its own native speakers in the gray Twilight Realm, so it is not closely related to any other language, but strange similarities to various languages, especially in terms of loanwords pop up frequently.
- Lycar'rd: A dark, terrible tongue spoken only in the Night Realm at some point long ago. The language survives in occult tomes, and is said to still be used in sacrilegious rituals. The alphabet can best be described as crude. This language has no known native speakers today, and it is believed that it was developed by some non-human source initially. Only fringe scholars who skirt the dangerous edge of heresy have any real knowledge of the language.
- Heliarc: A beautiful language spoken by those who have spent time travelling the Airwall. Consider this a celestial language of sorts, completely foreign to most living beings. The "alphabet" is not unlike heiroglyphics. The origin of this language is similarly unknown. Since few people even know of the inhabitants of the Airwall, this language is best known from a series of discovered, yet completely indecipherible stone tablets.
