This cute little girl was 4 years old in 1946. Her father was kill in action in WW II. Her family lived in the VFW National Home and she had the honor of presenting the first Buddy Poppy of 1946 to President Truman.
 

 

Donations for Buddy Poppies is used to assist disabled veterans and their families, and to help run the National Home for widows and orphans of veterans.

                    In Flanders Field
 

 
        In Flanders Field the poppies blow,
 
        between the crosses, row by row,
 
        that mark our place, and in the sky
 
        the larks, still bravely singing, fly
 
        scarce heard amid the guns below.
 

 
        We are the dead. Short days ago
 
        we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
 
        loved and were loved, and now we lie
 
        in Flanders Fields.
 

 
        Take up your quarrel with the foe,
 
        to you from failing hands we through
 
        the torch, be yours to hold it high.
 
        If ye break faith, with us who die.
 
        We shall not sleep, though poppies gro
 
        in Flanders Fields.
